Software engineering agent platform

Lantern vs Devin

Everyday screen help and agent attention, compared with a dedicated coding platform.

Checked · 5 official sources · Read the sources

Lantern is a small assistant beside your current application, with screen questions, Show me guidance and an inbox for supported coding agents. Devin combines software-engineering tasks with an editor, shell, browser and code-review workflow. It now offers cloud sessions, a local CLI and Devin Desktop. Desktop can run third-party ACP agents with those providers’ billing, so describing Devin as cloud-only or restricted to one model misses part of the current product. Lantern helps beside everyday applications and collects questions from supported existing coding sessions. Devin is a place to start and supervise software-engineering work. The tools may coexist: a small attention surface is a different role from the coding platform responsible for the implementation.

Choose Lantern if

  • You want to ask about the app in front of you without organizing another workspace.
  • You want visual next-step guidance through Show me.
  • You want questions from supported existing coding sessions collected in one nearby helper.

Choose Devin if

  • You want an integrated coding, testing and pull-request workflow.
  • You want local work and longer cloud tasks within Devin’s own product.
  • You want its Desktop ACP workflow for compatible third-party coding agents.

What kind of help do you need?

Lantern helps beside everyday applications and collects questions from supported existing coding sessions. Devin is a place to start and supervise software-engineering work. The tools may coexist: a small attention surface is a different role from the coding platform responsible for the implementation.

Keep attention separate from implementation

An everyday assistant does not need to replace the coding environment you already trust. Lantern can answer questions about the visible screen and surface supported agent requests while the implementation stays in a coding tool. Devin owns the software task itself. Compare that distinction before treating the two products as substitutes for the same job.

Questions about Lantern.

What does Lantern add if I already use Devin?

Lantern handles immediate screen questions and supported agent interruptions beside your current work. It can be useful without moving the implementation into a different coding platform.

Can I use Lantern without moving my project?

Yes. Start with a question about your current application. For coding-session attention and replies, use the documented integrations; do not assume every external local or cloud task is automatically connected.

How should I try Lantern with my current setup?

Ask about the application you are already using. If agent attention is the main need, test one supported session and its actual reply behavior.
