Lantern vs Grok Bot
Help on the screen you are using, or a persistent team in the cloud.
Checked · 3 official sources · Read the sources
Grok Bot is built around persistent AI teammates that can keep working on a shared cloud computer. Lantern starts closer to the desktop: ask about the screen in front of you, get guided help or hand a job to a helper. Both can be used for practical tasks, but the everyday experience differs. Grok Bot is compelling for standing responsibilities and work that continues independently; Lantern is compelling when the immediate problem is inside the application you are already using.
Choose Lantern if
- You want a helper at the edge of your screen for immediate questions and jobs.
- You want guided steps in the application you are using.
- You want one companion for supported coding agents as well as everyday assistance.
Choose Grok Bot if
- You want named AI teammates with continuing responsibilities.
- You need Bots working around the clock on a persistent cloud computer.
- You want to teach recurring workflows and connect Bots into a team.

Immediate assistance or a standing responsibility
Consider two different requests. “Where is the appearance setting in this app?” is immediate, visible and well suited to Lantern’s screen-first interaction. “Review incoming support requests throughout the week” is a continuing responsibility, which fits Grok Bot’s persistent cloud teammate model. Neither interface has to win every task. Choose according to whether you want help beside your current activity or a Bot with its own continuing stream of work.
Compare the cloud environment accurately
Grok’s documentation says a user’s Bots share one persistent cloud computer, including files, browser state and logins. That can make handoffs between those Bots straightforward, but it is different from assuming each Bot has an isolated machine. Lantern’s cloud access is tied to October’s current plans, while its local assistant is the nearby entry point. Check each product’s current plan, permissions and access model for the work you want to delegate.
A few practical questions.
Is Grok Bot the Grok coding CLI?
No. This page compares the persistent teammate product described at x.ai/bot. Grok’s other interfaces and coding tools are different product surfaces, so claims about a terminal agent should not automatically be applied to Grok Bot.
Does every Grok Bot have a separate computer?
The current Grok Bot FAQ says a user’s Bots share a persistent cloud computer. Their files, browser and logins are shared within that user’s environment. Isolation is described per user, rather than per individual Bot.
Can Lantern keep a job running with my laptop closed?
October’s current paid offerings describe cloud jobs that keep running separately from the laptop. Local helpers still depend on the computer they run on. Compare the current October plan with Grok Bot’s included cloud environment before choosing.
