Lantern vs Turnstone
A small on-screen helper, or named agents built around your work.
Checked · 3 official sources · Read the sources
Turnstone is built around a standing team of named agents, starting with a Chief of Staff, using the AI subscriptions or keys you connect. It emphasizes shared knowledge, connected apps and scheduled work. Lantern starts with a small helper beside your current screen: ask a question, follow guidance or hand a job to a supported helper. Both can fit a desktop routine, but one foregrounds building an enduring agent team while the other foregrounds immediate help and awareness of the agents you already run.
Choose Lantern if
- You want a small assistant beside the application you are already using.
- You want Show me guidance for a visible task.
- You want to monitor and answer supported coding agents as part of the same desktop routine.
Choose Turnstone if
- You want named agents with distinct jobs and continuing context.
- You want shared, editable knowledge across an agent team.
- You want connected-app workflows and schedules built around that team.

A nearby question or an enduring agent team
If you want to ask what an error means and continue with your day, Lantern’s point-and-ask interaction is a natural fit. If you want an agent to learn a continuing responsibility, share knowledge with other named agents and prepare a recurring briefing, Turnstone is designed around that pattern. This is an organizational difference, rather than a contest over whether either product can answer a question or use an AI model.
Read availability as well as the feature description
Turnstone’s public site describes its local Mac product and labels the cloud offering as coming soon at the date checked. Keep that distinction when assessing whether a schedule will run while the Mac is off. Lantern’s local helpers also depend on where they run, while October separately offers paid cloud features. For either tool, decide which jobs must be available away from the desk and verify the released environment that will execute them.
A few practical questions.
Does Turnstone use only one AI provider?
No. Its official page describes several supported subscriptions and provider keys, plus local Ollama models. Lantern also has several paths for AI access, but the exact supported accounts, features and plan requirements should be checked independently.
Is Turnstone Cloud available now?
At the date this comparison was checked, the public Turnstone homepage labels Cloud as coming soon. Its current availability should be verified on the official site before relying on a cloud-only workflow or a schedule that must run with the Mac closed.
Which is better for managing coding agents I already have?
Lantern publishes a specific companion workflow for supported coding sessions, their questions and reply routing. Turnstone is more naturally evaluated as its own standing team of named agents. Try the actual session and task flow that matters to you.
