Lantern vs Claude
Quick screen help, guided steps, and everyday jobs beside your apps.
Checked · 4 official sources · Read the sources
Claude and Lantern overlap on practical assistance, but organize that help differently. Lantern is a small desktop entry point for questions, screen guidance and jobs handled by helpers. Claude combines conversations with Cowork, which supports multi-step work, files, browser actions and substantial deliverables. Anthropic’s current Cowork documentation also describes cloud sessions that can be revisited across surfaces. Choose according to the work you repeat: immediate help inside another app, or an ongoing body of work organized around Claude.
Choose Lantern if
- You want to ask about your current screen without making a project first.
- You want Show me guidance to learn a task while doing it yourself.
- You want an assistant that also collects questions from supported coding agents.
Choose Claude if
- You already organize research, writing and files around Claude.
- You want Cowork projects, scheduled tasks and sessions accessible across surfaces.
- You need structured documents, spreadsheets or presentations as the main outcome.

Choose the right place for the task
For a small interruption such as finding a setting in an unfamiliar application, Lantern puts the question beside the application. It can explain the screen and guide the next click. For a collection of notes, source files and recurring research that belongs together, Claude’s projects and Cowork sessions give the work a more substantial home. Both approaches can be useful on the same computer; the important question is how much context you want to organize around that task.
Cowork deserves a fair comparison
Claude’s current capabilities go beyond ordinary chat. Its official guide includes browser actions, sub-agent coordination, cloud continuity, scheduling and professional outputs. Lantern should be chosen for its own interface and supported-agent workflows, rather than assumptions that Claude cannot work with files or take actions. Local resources still have connection requirements, so read the current Claude setup guide when deciding whether a particular workflow can continue while your computer is asleep.
A few practical questions.
Is this a comparison with Claude Code?
This page covers Claude’s assistant and Cowork experience. Claude Code has a separate comparison because repository tools, terminal workflows and code review are a different decision. Lantern can complement supported Claude Code sessions rather than replace the agent.
Does Claude work only on my computer?
No. The current Cowork guide describes cloud sessions and desktop access to local resources. Requirements differ for work that needs your own files or browser. Check Anthropic’s current documentation for the exact surface and capabilities you intend to use.
Can I keep using Claude with Lantern?
Yes. Choosing Lantern as a nearby assistant does not require abandoning Claude. You can keep Claude for its own conversations and Cowork workflows, and use Lantern for quick screen questions or the supported coding-agent companion experience.
