# Lantern vs Raycast AI

A little helper that stays nearby, alongside the launcher you already use.

Checked 2026-10-29.

Raycast combines a broad productivity environment with AI features, including screen context, projects, custom agents and automations. Lantern is a smaller companion at the edge of the screen, with questions, Show me guidance and an inbox for supported coding agents. Both can bring AI closer to the task you are doing. Choose Raycast when the launcher and its ecosystem are already central to your day; choose Lantern when you want the nearby helper and supported-agent attention flow to be the starting point.

## Choose Lantern if
- You want a small persistent helper rather than organizing work around a launcher.
- You want Show me instructions beside the app you are learning.
- You want supported coding agents’ questions collected in one companion interface.

## Choose Raycast AI if
- You already use Raycast for commands, clipboard tools, snippets and window management.
- You want AI commands and an extension ecosystem alongside your assistant.
- You want projects, custom agents, screen awareness and scheduled automations in Raycast.

## Give Raycast credit for more than shortcuts

Raycast’s current AI offering includes projects, memory, custom agents, screen context and automations. Calling it only a command launcher would miss the product you can choose today. Its broader productivity tools and extension ecosystem are a substantial reason to prefer it. Lantern’s reason to exist is its own persistent interface and supported coding-agent companion workflow, so the comparison should begin with those differences instead of an outdated feature list.

## Pick the surface that reduces interruption

If you already reach for Raycast to launch an application, find a snippet or manage a window, putting AI in the same interface can reduce friction. If you mostly want help that remains visible beside your current application, or questions from coding agents surfaced together, Lantern may fit better. Try the concrete daily loop: invoke the assistant, give it context, inspect the result and return to the application. That loop matters more than counting model names.

## Questions

### Can Raycast use screen context?

Yes. Raycast’s current AI page documents Screen Awareness, along with projects, memory and custom agents. Lantern’s point-and-ask interaction is one approach to screen context; it is not the only product with access to that kind of information.

### Do both support using my existing AI account or key?

Both describe ways to use existing AI access, but the supported providers and plan requirements differ. Check the current product settings and pricing pages for the account or API key you intend to use, rather than assuming identical coverage.

### Which is better if I already use Raycast?

Start by trying the AI features in the workflow you already know. Lantern is worth adding if its on-screen presence, Show me guidance or supported coding-agent inbox solves a separate problem you still encounter. You do not need to replace working launcher habits.
