# Lantern vs Hermes Agent

Screen guidance and agent awareness, beside a configurable agent harness.

Checked 2026-10-29.

Hermes Agent from Nous Research is an open-source agent harness with persistent memory, skills, tools and a messaging gateway. It can be the agent doing a job in a terminal, desktop interface or remote environment. Lantern supplies a nearby assistant and companion interface for asking about your screen and following supported coding agents. The choice is partly about which layer you need: a configurable agent to run tasks, a small place to notice and answer work, or a combination of those roles.

## Choose Lantern if
- You want screen explanations and guided steps beside the application you are using.
- You want a shared attention surface across supported coding tools.
- You prefer starting an everyday request from a small desktop helper.

## Choose Hermes Agent if
- You want to configure an open-source agent’s models, tools and execution environment.
- You want persistent agent memory and reusable skills as central features.
- You want an agent reachable through its messaging gateway and scheduled automations.

## Side by side

| What matters | Lantern | Hermes Agent |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Role | On-screen assistant and companion around supported helper sessions. | An agent harness that runs tasks using enabled tools and models. ([source](https://github.com/NousResearch/hermes-agent)) |
| Interface | A persistent lantern, quick questions and an agent inbox. | Terminal UI, desktop app and messaging gateway surfaces are documented. ([source](https://github.com/NousResearch/hermes-agent)) |
| Memory and skills | Supply context relevant to a question or helper job. | Persistent memory, conversation search and generated skills are core documented features. ([source](https://github.com/NousResearch/hermes-agent)) |
| AI route | October’s assistant AI and supported existing helpers; plan-specific own-key features. | Choose supported model providers or an endpoint in Hermes configuration. ([source](https://github.com/NousResearch/hermes-agent)) |
| Starting work | You ask Lantern to start a job; cloud continuation depends on the plan. | Built-in scheduling can deliver results through configured messaging platforms. ([source](https://github.com/NousResearch/hermes-agent)) |
| Execution environment | The helper or cloud environment selected for the requested work. | Local, container and remote terminal backends are documented. ([source](https://github.com/NousResearch/hermes-agent)) |
| Getting started | Install Lantern and enable the permissions needed for the feature. | Install Hermes, select a provider and configure tools or the gateway as required. ([source](https://github.com/NousResearch/hermes-agent)) |

## The harness owns the tools and the task

Hermes offers meaningful control over how an agent works: model routing, tool availability, execution backends, memory and reusable skills. Those are reasons to choose it when configuring the agent itself is important. Lantern solves a different interface problem, keeping help and supported-agent attention beside the rest of the desktop. It should not be described as replacing the configuration or execution engine of a full agent harness just because both products can receive a natural-language request.

## Match the interface to the work you repeat

A terminal-centered user may prefer Hermes’s own conversation, commands and streaming tool output. Someone who spends the day across ordinary desktop apps may prefer a small screen-side helper for immediate explanations and handoffs. A remote operator may value Hermes’s gateway and schedule delivery to messaging channels. These preferences can coexist. Check Lantern’s current supported-agent list separately before assuming that a Hermes process has the same status and reply integration as Claude Code or Codex.

## Questions

### Is Hermes Agent only a terminal tool?

No. Nous Research documents a desktop app and messaging gateway as well as its terminal interface. The product can also use remote execution environments. This page compares its role as an agent harness with Lantern’s assistant and companion interface.

### Does Lantern fully integrate every Hermes workflow?

Do not assume that. Detection, detailed state, reply routing and remote access are separate capabilities. Check Lantern’s current supported-agent documentation for the exact integration you want; a logo or comparison page is not a compatibility guarantee.

### Which is better for custom agent infrastructure?

Hermes is the stronger starting point when you want to choose models, configure tools, manage execution backends and operate a messaging gateway. Lantern is designed for a nearby desktop request and attention across its supported helper workflows.
